IMO Secretary-General urges decisive action on ballast water and Costa Concordia accident

September 12, 2012 Featured, News No Comments

IMO Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu has called on governments and the shipping industry to take prompt and decisive action on a number of key issues.

In a keynote address to the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) Conference in London today (12 September 2012), Mr. Sekimizu told shipowners that they had the power to encourage their flag States to ratify the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments, 2004 (Ballast Water Management Convention) as soon as possible, as well as to implement its provisions with immediate effect.

He pointed to the good number of ballast water treatment technologies now approved and available, together with the fixed deadlines for their application contained in the Convention, as convincing reasons why the industry should not wait any longer to implement its provisions.

Warning of the negative consequences of further delay in bringing the convention into force, Mr. Sekimizu said; “The problems associated with ballast water are inherently connected to the expansion of world trade. This is an issue from which the shipping industry cannot escape.” … Continue Reading

May 9, 2012 Featured, News No Comments

On April 23, 2012, while enroute from Japan to Singapore, Teekay’s MV Galway Spirit received an urgency call from the MV Zante, a nearby container vessel.

The Zante advised that 32 miles had passed since their junior engineer had last been seen onboard. A search area was established and the Galway Spirit quickly moved to cover the area.

For more than five hours, the Galway Spirit crew aided in the rescue operation, positioning three lookouts on deck and all available crew on the bridge.

Although the Galway Spirit intercepted anything spotted – including debris, buoys and even a whale – there was no sign of the engineer.  At approximately 8:00pm, in complete darkness, the Galway Spirit transited the established zone. With heavy hearts, the Galway Spirit crew formally ended their search.
