Peru hosts World Maritime Day Parallel Event

IMO SmallPeru has hosted the 2013 IMO World Maritime Day Parallel Event, on 2 and 3 October 2013, with a seminar and other activities, focusing on this year’s World Maritime Day theme:  “Sustainable Development: IMO’s contribution beyond Rio+20″”.
The parallel event was attended by representatives from the maritime community in Peru, South America and the rest of the world.
In his opening speech, IMO Secretary-General Sekimizu told the seminar that shipping would have a central part to play if the world is to achieve sustainable development.
“This is because shipping, and ports, are vital links in the global supply chain, the complex mechanism without which today’s inter-dependent, global economy would be simply unable to function. Shipping has always provided the only truly cost-effective method of bulk transport over any great distance, and the development of shipping and the establishment of a global system of trade are intrinsically linked,” he said. … Continue Reading

Eni: first oil from the Kashagan field has been produced

ENIHistoric step for one of the largest oil fields discovered in the last 40 years and one of the most complex industrial projects worldwide.

San Donato Milanese (Milan), 11 September 2013 – Eni announces today that first oil from the giant Kashagan oil field has been produced. The oilfield is located in the North Caspian Sea, approximately 80 kilometres southeast of Atyrau, in Kazakhstan. Eni holds a 16.81% stake in the consortium for the development of Kashagan and through Agip KCO is responsible for developing and start of production of the field.

The other partners in the consortium, represented by the operator NCOC (North Caspian Operating Company) which operates within the North Caspian Sea Production Sharing Agreement (NCSPSA), are KazMunayGas (16.81%), ExxonMobil (16.81%), Shell (16.81%), Total (16.81%), ConocoPhillips (8.4%) and Inpex (7.56%).

In the initial phase output will grow up to 180,000 barrels per day. Afterwards, the production will increase progressively up to 370,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. … Continue Reading

GL Garrad Hassan Commissioned for “FINO Wind” Research Project

GL_GROUP_SMALLDWD (German Weather Service) has commissioned GL Garrad Hassan to be responsible for an extensive sub-project within the scope of the “FINO Wind” research project. This involves taking an inventory of the metadata, utilisation and collection of LiDAR wind measurement data for the correction of mast effects, as well as the uncertainty estimation and assessment of the measuring set-up and data.

The objective of the research project is to combine the measurement campaigns on the three FINO platforms as well as to develop standardised analyses of the FINO wind measurement data. Overall responsibility for the three-year research project lies with DWD, which coordinates several research partners in this project.

“The results of the ‘FINO Wind’ project will make a decisive contribution to obtaining a cohesive overview of the wind conditions in the North Sea and Baltic Sea. Siem Offshore selects Wärtsilä’s design and integrated solution for yet another LNG powered platform supply vessel

wartsila_smallWärtsilä, the marine industry’s leading solutions and services provider, has been awarded the contract to supply the design and an integrated solution for a new large platform supply vessel (PSV). The ship will operate primarily on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and is owned by Siem Offshore, the Norway based provider of marine services to the oil and gas industry. It will be operated under charter by A/S Norske Shell. The PSV is being built at the Remontowa Shipbuilding’s yard in Poland.

The contract’s scope of supply includes the Wärtsilä VS 4411 LNG PSV initial, basic, and detailed ship design, as well as the complete diesel electric system withWärtsilä dual-fuel generating sets, the Wärtsilä LNGPac gas storage and handling system, and the complete electrical and automation system, including a four-splitWärtsilä LLC (Low Loss Concept) solution. The Wärtsilä LLC will help the vessel fulfil the highest possible Environmental Regularity Number (ERN) of, which represents the vessel’s capability for maintaining its position and normal operations under certain weather conditions.

The 89.2 metre long vessel is scheduled to commence operations in 2015 and will be used to support offshore drilling and production activities in the North Sea. It can accommodate a crew of 25. … Continue Reading
