Teekay Logo SmallAn important milestone was reached on August 11, 2013: Navion Anglia commenced the sea passage to Las Palmas with the HiLoad Dynamic Positioning No. 1 safely docked at her port side.

Last November, Teekay Offshoreannounced an agreement to acquire this self-propelled dynamic positioning (DP) system that attaches to and keeps conventional tankers in position when loading from offshore installations. The HiLoad is a cost effective, flexible and safe solution to transport the oil long haul to the refinery, with no need for a shuttle tanker.

The design of the 2010-built unit was inspired by the Remora fish – one of the world’s most fascinating creatures that employs suction to attach itself to larger creatures such as sharks and whales. Teekay’s new HiLoad DP is no different – it connects to any type of tanker keeping them in a safe distance from the production unit.

Now, the HiLoad DP is safely docked to the Navion Anglia and embarked to Las Palmas. The vessel departed the Norwegian port of Kirstiansund in southern Norway on a 10-year time charter contract with Petroleo Baislero SA (Petrobras) in Brazil.  … Continue Reading

GL Garrad Hassan to support Guangdong Electrical Design Institute in the offshore wind power market

August 20, 2013 News No Comments

GL_GROUP_SMALLThe third phase of training courses provided by GL Garrad Hassan to Guangdong Electrical Design Institute (GEDI) has been successfully completed. The training courses have aided GEDI in their talent development and technology accumulation. GL Garrad Hassan will continue to support GEDI to a larger extent in the follow-up wind power projects off the coast of Guangdong Province.

GL Garrad Hassan has signed a contract with GEDI for extensive design support on offshore wind turbine foundations and evaluating their suitability for various offshore wind projects. The renewable energy consultancy will provide technology support, design advice and review, technical seminars, and will issue technical review reports for each project GEDI is delivering to.

GL Garrad Hassan has provided technical services and support to onshore and offshore wind energy, wave energy, tidal energy and solar energy projects around the world. GEDI, the survey designer of the first offshore wind power project in Guangdong province, is taking advantage of this experience to gain a deeper understanding of the latest software and international specifications to optimise offshore turbine foundations and design. As a result of this cooperation, GEDI will also gain greater insight into the Chinese and global engineering industry, which will aid the development of GEDIs offshore engineering business. … Continue Reading

Gas/condensate discovery north of Åsgard

August 20, 2013 News No Comments
Statoil LogoOperator Statoil has together with PL479 partners made a gas/condensate discovery in the Smørbukk North prospect at Haltenbanken in the Norwegian Sea.

Exploration well 6506/9-3, drilled by the drilling rig Transocean Leader, has proven a 40-metre gas/condensate column in a down-to situation in the Garn formation of mid-Jurassic age.

In addition a thin gas/condensate column was proven deeper in the mid-Jurassic Ile formation. The reservoir properties of the Garn formation are good, while somewhat poorer than expected in the Ile formation.

The preliminary estimated volume of the discovery is in the range of 25-47 million barrels of recoverable oil equivalent (o.e.).

“We are very pleased with having proven the new resources,” says Gro G. Haatvedt, senior vice president exploration Norway in Statoil.

“The three discoveries comprising the Åsgard field were all made in the 1980s. Making a new discovery in the area 30 years later is encouraging and proves the exciting remaining potential on the NCS.” … Continue Reading

IMO Secretary-General welcomes entry into force of Maritime Labour Convention

August 20, 2013 Featured, News No Comments
IMO SmallIMO Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu today (20 August) welcomed the entry into force of the
Maritime Labour Convention (MLC 2006), adopted by the International Labour Organization (ILO), a sister UN agency to IMO.

“The entry into force of the MLC convention marks significant progress in the recognition of seafarers’ roles and the need to safeguard their well-being and their working conditions. This is a truly important landmark for seafarers; and for shipping, on which the global economy relies,” Mr. Sekimizu said.

The MLC treaty, which has been ratified by 48 countries, aims to achieve decent work for the world’s seafarers and secure economic interests in fair competition for quality shipowners.

The MLC is considered the ‘fourth pillar’ of the most important maritime regulations covering international shipping, complementing three major conventions adopted by IMO: the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS); the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL); and the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW). … Continue Reading
