wartsila_smallSix new bulk carriers, being built at the Namura and Onomichi shipyards in Japan, are to be fitted with 12 Wärtsilä Aquarius UV ballast water management systems (BWMS). The Wärtsilä systems will enable the vessels to comply with anticipated International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations. The contracts were signed in October.

Japan has recently ratified the IMO’s Ballast Water Management Convention, and these orders are the first for Aquarius UV systems for newbuild vessels from a Japanese shipyard. The Namura yard will install two BWMS units with a capacity of up to 500 m3 of ballast water per hour to each of two 34,000 DWT carriers. The Onomichi yard is building four 60,000 DWT carriers, each of which will be fitted with two Aquarius UV systems having a capacity of up to 1000 m3 per hour. Deliveries from Wärtsilä will commence at the end of 2014 and will be completed by mid 2016.

Eni successfully completed the production test on Minsala Marine 1 exploration well Offshore Congo

ENIEni has successfully completed the production test on the Minsala Marine 1 NFW, located in the Marine XII Block offshore Congo, 35 kilometers from the shoreline and 12 kilometers from the recent Nené Marine discovery. During the production test the well delivered in natural flow in excess of 5,000 barrels of oil per day and 14 million standard cubic feet of gas per day from an opened section of 37 meters out of the 420 meters oil column identified in the discovery. The oil quality is 41 degrees API.

Eni preliminarily estimates the potential of Minsala Marine discovery to be about 1 billion barrels of oil equivalent in place, of which 80% is oil. The Company has scheduled an appraisal plan for the discovery and has begun studying the commercial development of its significant hydrocarbons reserves.

“The production test results has exceeded expectations and enables us to plan a fast commercial development of the important Minsala Marine find, similarly to what had been done at Nene’ Marine” said Claudio Descalzi, CEO of Eni.

IMO joins UN organizations in call to action to address irregular maritime migration

IMO SmallThe International Maritime Organization (IMO) has joined with other UN agencies in calling for concerted action from the international community to address the deeply concerning problem of the loss of life, injury, trauma and serious human rights violations affecting migrants, asylum-seekers and refugees traveling by sea.

In a joint statement, IMO, along with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), said that closer cooperation between States of origin, transit and destination, and other relevant actors, was critical to reducing loss of life at sea, addressing the drivers of dangerous sea journeys, as well as ensuring that responses by States upon arrival and disembarkation uphold human rights and dignity, and address specific needs for protection of migrants, asylum-seekers and refugees.

“Such cooperation is also critical to identifying, prosecuting and punishing the criminal gangs who are responsible for human rights abuses and for arranging sea transportation in breach of all safety regulations,” the statement said, noting that while the high frequency of incidents involving death in the … Continue Reading

Gazprom and Petrovietnam discuss future cooperation in oil and gas sector

gazprom_smallThe Gazprom headquarters hosted today a working meeting between Alexey Miller, Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee and Nguyen Xuan Son, Chairman of the PetroVietnam Oil and Gas Group (PVN) Board of Directors.

The parties addressed the future cooperation in the oil and gas sector. In particular, they touched upon the joint actions offshore Vietnam as well as within gas production projects in Russia. It was pointed out that the jointly developed Moc Tinh and Hai Thach fields located on the Vietnamese shelf would reach their full capacity by 2016 and would produce nearly two billion cubic meters of gas per year.

The meeting participants also discussed the prospects for cooperation in LNG supply from Gazprom’s portfolio to Vietnam as well as boosting the partnership in the NGV sector in the Republic.
