Wärtsilä awarded another design contract for arctic operations

August 14, 2014 News No Comments

wartsila_smallA second confirmed design contract for Wärtsilä’s new series of arctic platform supply vessels has been signed. This latest order is for a multi-purpose platform supply vessel (MPSV) being built by Tersan Shipyard in Turkey on behalf of U.S.- based Tidewater Inc, the leading provider of offshore service vessels to the global energy industry. The vessel will be operated by the Norwegian Troms Offshore Supply Group, a 100%-owned subsidiary of Tidewater. There is an option for further three similar vessels.

A key element in the award of this contract was Tidewater’s requirement for a compact design yet with a high deadweight giving maximum cargo capacity. Operational efficiency and reduced fuel consumption were among the other reasons why the Wärtsilä solution was selected. The vessel is designed to fit three Wärtsilä 8-cylinder in-line Wärtsilä 26 main engines, propulsion systems, a ballast water management system, and inert gas generators. The vessel is scheduled for delivery in 2016.

“Once again, Wärtsilä Ship Design’s deep understanding of the complexities involved in operating in the harshest climatic conditions, and its ability to produce a design that fully meets the customer’s expectations has been rewarded with a significant order. Wärtsilä’s total solution capability, combining a strong and efficient design with fuel saving propulsion, is increasingly important in the market for ice class vessels,” says Riku-Pekka Hägg, Vice President, Ship Design, Wärtsilä Ship Power. … Continue Reading

SOLAS rules for ships to be able to recover persons from the water enter into force

August 14, 2014 News No Comments

IMO SmallNew requirements under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) to require all ships to have plans and procedures to recover persons from the water are among a set of SOLAS amendments entering into force on 1 July 2014.

Recovery of persons from the water
The SOLAS amendments, adopted in 2012, were developed as part of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s work on large passenger ship safety and are aimed at ensuring all ships have the capability to effectively serve as a rescue asset and have the right equipment to be able to rescue persons from the water and from survival craft, in the event of an incident.

This new requirement is intended to enhance safety at sea and also to provide support to search and rescue coordinators in all types of rescue operations and, particularly, in those situations where there is insufficient dedicated search and rescue capacity or access to helicopters and specialized rescue craft is limited.

The ship’s plans and procedures should take into account related Guidelines for the development of plans and procedures for recovery of persons from the water (MSC.1/Circ.1447). … Continue Reading

Wärtsilä launches new Aframax tanker design at Posidonia 2014 exhibition

June 3, 2014 News No Comments

wartsila_smallA new, highly efficient, Aframax tanker design offering practical and viable solutions that meet current and forthcoming emissions legislation is today launched by Wärtsilä at the Posidonia 2014 exhibition in Athens, Greece. Wärtsilä will also be featuring its range of merchant ship designs to provide owners with tailored designs based specifically on their intended operating profiles. Wärtsilä Ship Design also offers shipyards a solution based approach with integration packages and full support throughout the planning and execution phases.

The new Aframax design emphasises energy efficiency to provide lower operating costs and enhanced environmental performance. It features an optimised hull form to minimize resistance, and an optimised propulsion train with energy saving devices (ESDs) for greater efficiency. Fuel savings have been the primary focus during the development of this design, and significant testing of the hull lines by both CFD and tank testing have successfully produced a highly competitive design. Wärtsilä offers the Aframax design in three, fit-for-purpose versions; the Basic configuration using conventional HFO fuel, Environmental with the exhaust emissions cleaned using a scrubber and selective catalyst reduction (SCR), and the Green version based on dual-fuel engines using LNG. The design can also be adapted for Ice Class notation.

“Wärtsilä is an experienced and innovative global supplier of efficient, reliable and environmentally sustainable ship designs that fully meet the needs of the rapidly changing marine sector. … Continue Reading

New regional structure for counter-piracy code implementation

June 3, 2014 News No Comments
IMO SmallMinisters from participating States in the Code of Conduct concerning the Repression of Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in the Western Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden (the Djibouti Code of Conduct) have recognized the need to develop a mechanism for the region to run its own counter-piracy agenda, following the successful implementation by IMO of numerous projects aimed at improving regional capacity to counter piracy by developing enhanced regional cooperation and coordination.
A high-level meeting, held at IMO Headquarters in London on 30 May, agreed a resolution on future work under the Djibouti Code of Conduct. The resolution envisages the immediate launch of work to establish a new structure for regional implementation of the Djibouti Code of Conduct, with IMO playing a supportive role during a transitional period. There was also widespread appreciation of the work of IMO in implementing the Code, as well as the support provided by the ReCAAP-ISC.
The meeting was attended by 80 delegates, including ministers and other officials from the Djibouti Code of Conduct participating and signatory States, as well as by representatives from a number of donor States and international organizations including the European Union (EU), ReCAAP, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the Contact Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia.
