IMO SmallThe International Maritime Organization (IMO) has issued a call for papers for a major global research and development forum on ballast water management, to be held in March 2016.

The forum will provide an opportunity for experts to share the latest developments in technologies that may stop the spread of potentially invasive aquatic species in ships’ ballast water.

The 6th Global Environment Facility (GEF)-United Nations Development Program (UNDP)- International Maritime Organization (IMO) GloBallast R&D Forum and Exhibition on Ballast Water Management will be held from 16-18 March 2016 at the Headquarters of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), in Montreal, Canada.

Wärtsilä powered Harvey Gulf OSVs awarded Workboats of the Year title

wartsila_smallThe annual Significant Boats awards programme, hosted by Workboat magazine, has recognised Harvey Gulf International Marine’s LNG fuelled offshore supply vessels, powered by Wärtsilä engines, as the Workboats of the Year for 2015. The award was announced at the 2015 International Workboat Show in New Orleans.

The Harvey Energy and Harvey Power OSVs are powered by three 6-cylinder Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel generator sets running primarily on liquefied natural gas (LNG). The vessels are also equipped with Wärtsilä’s Integrated Automation System, electrical distribution switchboards, propulsion transformers, and azimuthing and transverse thrusters. Rounding out the Wärtsilä equipment scope are the 290 m3 LNG storage tank, the fuel gas handling system, and the bunker station.

The strong partnership between Harvey Gulf and Wärtsilä has been developed through very close cooperation during the sales, construction, commissioning, and delivery phases. … Continue Reading

JFC Manufacturing announces details of new jobs, at the ‘Innovating the future of Marine Navigation Safety’ conference in Galway on Friday 16th October, at the launch of the west of Ireland company’s new division, JFC Marine. The jobs will be in the area of engineering, research and development. The JFC Manufacturing Group, currently employing 240, with annual turnover in the region of €50m, headquartered in Tuam, Co. Galway with facilities in UK, Poland, South Africa and Holland, is traditionally known for plastics manufacturing and agricultural products. They will be marketing their new range of Navigation aids to Safety globally, consisting of Marine Marker Buoys, Solar Marine Lanterns as well as data monitoring and control systems for marine applications.

‘In the region of 15 to 20 new jobs will be created in the next couple of years, people with expertise in engineering and research and development in particular. IMFThe 2015 Irish Maritime Forum, attended by over 150 delegates, discussed the importance of the Maritime Industry to Ireland’s continued economic growth and how solutions to a number of the world’s great challenges will come from the Sea. The National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI) hosted the forum, which was officially opened by John Mullins, Chairman, Port of Cork in the presence of Simon Coveney, TD, Minister of State for Agriculture, Food, the Marine, and Defence.

The theme of the forum was “Success through Synergy – an innovative and dynamic approach to the future.” Speakers, including Conor Mowlds, Head of College at the NMCI and Cormac Gebreurs, Head of Halpin Centre for Research and Innovation, touched on numerous topics including Ireland’s maritime potential, trends in the international shipping industry, and the Irish Tonnage tax system.

A Maritime Skills Panel discussed the shortage of skilled personnel in the industry, the issues that face the industry in terms of sourcing the right personnel, and how new legislation is affecting the industry in terms of recruitment. … Continue Reading
