wartsila_smallWärtsilä introduces the latest addition to its thruster product portfolio, the Wärtsilä WST-14 steerable thruster, which represents state-of-the-art azimuthing propeller technology. It is aimed primarily at inland waterway cargo vessel applications. The new thruster will provide increased reliability and efficiency, while also lowering costs.

Among the many innovations incorporated into the WST-14 are its space-saving compact design, an integrated slipping clutch that provides a cost competitive solution for manoeuvring when combined with a fixed pitch (FP) propeller, and the ability to maintain and service the propeller shaft and steering seals without requiring a complete overhaul of the thruster. It has a straightforward, reliable design and is ice-class rated.

By combining the 6-cylinder in-line Wärtsilä 20 engine with the WST-14 thruster, a solution package that is ideal for the specific demands of river and inland waterway operation can be offered. Maritime education and training in focus at Japan’s World Maritime Day Parallel Event

IMO SmallMaritime education and training needs – now and in the future – were the focus of a high-level international symposium held during the 2015 World Maritime Day Parallel Event (20 – 21 July), hosted in Japan’s port city of Yokohama and its capital Tokyo. The event was held in conjunction with Japan’s Marine Day, which is a national holiday.

The opening session, held in Tokyo, was attended by Mr Shinzō Abe, the Prime Minister of Japan, and addressed by Mr Akihiro Ohta, Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Japan.

The two-day event was attended by some 400 representatives from the maritime community in Japan and other countries, including government representatives and representatives from the maritime industry, non-governmental organizations and academia. Wärtsilä Lanka to increase efficiency and reliability of State Electric Company (STELCO) Maldives

wartsila_smallWärtsilä Lanka, a fully owned subsidiary of Wärtsilä Corporation, has signed a three year service agreement with the State Electric Company of Maldives (STELCO) in May 2015 in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Under the terms of the service contract, Wärtsilä Lanka will ensure the timely and accurate delivery of spare parts to support maintenance activities, along with training STELCO engineering personnel and the exchange of technological know-how.

STELCO will also benefit from other Wärtsilä Lanka value offerings such as highly qualified expert technical support, onsite engineering expertise including advisory services, periodic inspection visits, troubleshooting service and technical audits.

The State Electric Company Ltd (STELCO), established in 1949,is a fully owned energy and electricity provider of the Maldives Government with total installed capacity of nearly 80 MW. The main installation is located at the capital island, Male, with installed capacity of 60 MW. of this, 30 MW of energy output is from Wärtsilä engines. … Continue Reading
