New platform set to improve information sharing on migrant smuggling by sea

July 12, 2015 News No Comments

IMO SmallA new inter-agency platform for information sharing on migrant smuggling by sea has been launched today (6 July) by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in order to better understand unsafe mixed migration by sea.

It is anticipated that the platform will assist in improved monitoring of incidents associated with unsafe and irregular mixed migration by sea, on a global basis, with a view to better analysis of trends.

The IMO/IOM/UNODC platform will include a joint database on migrant incidents and on suspected smugglers and vessels. A revised reporting format for States, international organizations and relevant non-governmental organizations to submit information to the database was recently agreed at IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 95).

wartsila_smallA new modern fishing vessel being built by Simek AS in Norway on behalf of the U.K. operator Antares (Whalsay) Fishing Company Ltd, will feature an integrated Wärtsilä propulsion solution including main engine, controllable pitch propeller and gearbox. The Wärtsilä 2-speed gearbox, PTO/PTI, and floating frequency solution will provide the vessel with high levels of operational efficiency and flexibility in different operating modes, which were important considerations in the award of this contract. The contract was signed in June.

The vessel will be powered by a 12-cylinder Wärtsilä 32 main engine, and will operate in the fishing fields around the Shetland Islands in the north of Scotland. The Wärtsilä machinery will be delivered in spring 2016, and the vessel is scheduled to be handed over to the owners in December 2016.

“We needed to replace an existing vessel with a new more efficient design.
It is very important that the ship is capable of reliable and efficient transit to and from the port and flexible trawling operations. We have experience with Wärtsilä machinery and are confident that it will fulfil all the needed operational requirements for the owners”, say Laurence Irvine (Skipper) and George Williamson (Chief Engineer). … Continue Reading
