October 6, 2015 Featured, News No Comments

IMFThe 2015 Irish Maritime Forum, attended by over 150 delegates, discussed the importance of the Maritime Industry to Ireland’s continued economic growth and how solutions to a number of the world’s great challenges will come from the Sea. The National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI) hosted the forum, which was officially opened by John Mullins, Chairman, Port of Cork in the presence of Simon Coveney, TD, Minister of State for Agriculture, Food, the Marine, and Defence.

The theme of the forum was “Success through Synergy – an innovative and dynamic approach to the future.” Speakers, including Conor Mowlds, Head of College at the NMCI and Cormac Gebreurs, Head of Halpin Centre for Research and Innovation, touched on numerous topics including Ireland’s maritime potential, trends in the international shipping industry, and the Irish Tonnage tax system.

A Maritime Skills Panel discussed the shortage of skilled personnel in the industry, the issues that face the industry in terms of sourcing the right personnel, and how new legislation is affecting the industry in terms of recruitment.

Dave Ward, Commerical Service Manager with the Commissioner of Irish Lights spoke about the Great Lighthouses of Ireland and the role they are taking in the development of all island Lighthouse Tourism Projects, which look to secure and protect lighthouse heritage.

Conor Mowlds said “sharing information and experiences helps to shape policies and The Irish Maritime Forum provided a wonderful opportunity for Maritime Professionals.”
